Cast Away (2000) – Memphis Memphis: Chuck (Tom Hanks) had his welcome scene filmed at the FedEx Superhub. Filming takes place in Hanger 21 and features a cameo appearance by the founder and CEO of FedEx, Fred Smith. FedEx, the well-known shipping company, was founded in 1913 by C.J. Tower and Sons in Niagara Falls, NY as a customs broker. The overnight shipping arm which features a multitude of aircraft to handle the estimated 3.2 million packages and documents each business day is the largest operating company in the FedEx family. It is said to have its origins in a term paper written by a Yale undergraduate who detailed how the aircraft shippers at the time were quite inadequate.
