Estes Park: The 16,000 square foot Stanley Hotel, built in 1909, served as Stephen King’s inspiration for the movie. However, the movie itself was not filmed here. Rather, the exterior for the movie hotel was shot at the Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Oregon. Despite this, the hotel is purportedly quite haunted. Ghost tours are offered daily. Also located nearby is the breathtaking Rocky Mountain National Park.
